I find 3D digital modelling a quick way to explore possibilities with the added bonus that it is very easy to generate full sized drawings once the model is finalised. This is one iteration of an exploration of panel possibilities. Using this model I made a full sized drawing of the shelves and cut them out of MDF. I tried out positions for the columns testing whether a trade paperback would fit between them. I then turned the columns and feet out of of oak as I was certain of this design element, then I assembled a simple full sized mock up to take home and try out. As a result I settled on a slightly lower version than my two students who are also each making a pair of cabinets.
