One of the things that I consistently ask my students who are studying design with me is ‘what gives a distinctive New Zealand flavour to your design?’ Asking myself that question led to some refinements to the design. I have been considering for some time now how to incorporate some of the familiar elements of vernacular architecture into my furniture designs. The use of TG&V panelling, so familiar from the Victorian villas of the Dunedin of my youth, is one such element. In addition the colour scheme of the Waka and Marae has inspired the inclusion of black and red ochre elements.
